The Exchange, Centenary Square

Client University of Birmingham

Sector Higher Education

Location Birmingham

Value £26m

The Exchange, Centenary Square is a prime example of a successful redevelopment project in the city of Bimingham, which saw the transformation of an empty Grade II-listed building into a new base in the heart of the city for the University.

The £26m project was originally the Municipal Bank Headquarters, but has stood empty for almost a decade. Together, Galliford Try and the University of Birmingham have brought the building back to life and have allowed it to return to its rightful place in the heart of the local community. The building sits in a prime position within the recently redeveloped Centenary Square, in the heart of Birmingham’s city centre.

The project has created a new gateway building for the university, an asset not just for the university but the whole community and combines interactive public exhibitions, professional development events, entrepreneurship and research, along with a new high quality catering offer, conference and commercial hire spaces. Any features of historic or architectural interest were conserved or restored and many original features were protected such as the original bank vaults, which have been turned into a unique exhibition space.
