Galliford Try's Investments team delivered a package of 12 schools across the North East under an ambitious PF2 project.

The North East Priority School Building Programme (NE PSBP) batch was the first of its kind to be delivered under the government’s new PF2 funding method. Completed ahead of both time and budget, the NE PSBP is widely regarded both internally and externally as an exceptionally successful programme.

The batch incorporated six new primary and six new secondary schools, spanning seven local authorities in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham. The full building programme was valued at £100 million, with Galliford Try’s Facilities Management business providing ongoing life-cycle services in a further £50 million 25-year contract.

The programme proved the success of Galliford Try’s standardised approach to secondary school design, allowing for cost and time savings through repeatability through four standard block typologies, which can be connected in different ways to accommodate varied sizes of schools, site constraints, organisational models and user preferences. Not only did this then allow for greater speed and efficiency during the build process, but it also means that ongoing life-cycle costs can be lowered through economies of scale and practice sharing between the facilities management teams.

The project won ‘Best Education Project’ at the 2016 Partnership Awards which recognise the best in Public Private Partnerships (PPP) internationally.
