The Eastern Command and Custody Facility provided a much-needed new hub for North Wales police

Delivered under the North Wales Construction Partnership framework, the £17.5m project consisted of a new 8,430 sqm building, featuring office and administrative space and a 32-cell custody suite serving the North Wales region.

The design utilised an innovative pre-cast concrete frame hybrid structure that allowed the early integration of building elements that traditionally would be installed at site, features such as the M&E services, windows and door units were all built into the pre-cast units.

This made it much easier to ensure that building components were compliant with specific Home Office standards to maintain safety and security, as well as cutting programme time by approximately 11 weeks against a traditional build.

Other innovations included the manufacture of a bespoke custody desk to protect police staff and arrested individuals, and quiet cells, specially designed to be occupied by vulnerable individuals.

The project was subsequently recognised by Constructing Excellence Wales, winning the Client of the Year and the Offsite Awards at the national award ceremony in 2018.
