Galliford Try is taking part in a number of events this week to support the Unlocking Construction National recruitment initiative, which promotes careers and opportunities within the industry to prison leavers.

Unlocking Construction, developed by New Futures Network – part of HM Prisons and Probation Service, is a two-week drive aimed at opening up career opportunities for individuals who will shortly leave prison. The scheme is intended to help sectors like construction fill skills gaps, while promoting positive change to prisoners, reducing the likelihood of repeat offending and benefiting wider society.

The Building Southern team took part in an event at HMP High Down, providing an insight in construction careers, and leading workshops covering CV assistance and interview techniques, as well as promoting confidence and self-esteem.

Throughout the week, Galliford Try will host further sessions across the country, including careers days at HMP Lincoln and HMP Bristol.

Heather Bryant, Corporate Responsibility Manager for Galliford Try Building Southern, who led the event at HMP High Down, commented: “We were delighted to deliver workshops at HMP High Down that build on the work we are doing with offenders and ex-offenders. We will hopefully have inspired some of those who took part to take up careers in construction when their sentences come to an end.”

Suzie Ellis, Group Communities and Social Value Manager, commented: “Providing routes back into the workforce for ex-offenders not only helps with the current skills shortage in construction, but supports a more successful transition from custody to a civilian life, building a new future in valuable roles that will reduce the change of reoffending.

“We are pleased to be taking part in this worthwhile campaign and look forward to inviting some of those involved to begin a career with Galliford Try in the future.”
